Celebrity Christian Leaders

I think all Christians are guilty of overly hero-worshipping a particular preacher, theologian or spiritual leader. But wait long enough and they will always let you down.

When I was younger and being a person of low self-esteem by nature, I used to enjoy the uplifting messages of Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyer.

It didn’t take too long of course to realise that Osteen rarely mentions Christ, sin, repentance and obfuscates on the way of salvation even on national television. Joyce was better. She actually reads and tries to preach the Word of God. Unfortunately, she like Osteen is a terrible role model with her unnecessary multi million dollar homes and private jets.

Both also subscribe to the ‘name it and claim it’ prosperity gospel and particularly in the case of Meyer, believe and preach that as mini gods ourselves, we can speak into existence anything we want, just as God spoke the universe into existence ex nihilo. This is obviously false and no different from Rhonda Byrnes The Secret – the principles of the so-called laws of attraction as propagated by new age secular pastrix Oprah Winfrey. Oprah of course denies that Christ is the only way to salvation in willful defiance of Jesus claims about Himself in the book of John in the New Testament.

After abandoning such idolatry, I began to pay more attention to John Piper, he of quivering voice and blood earnest sincerity. I listened to Ask Pastor John for many months and found him to be largely theologically sound in his Calvinistic convictions. I was also impressed by his decades-old scandal-free ministry which speaks of a man of great character.

However although we could never speak of Piper and Osteen/Meyer in the same breath, disturbing trends began to emerge with Piper too.

The net result is that it is extremely hard to find men who put a high value on the accurate exegesis of scripture and the clear preaching of the Gospel or those who do but sell out to worldliness and worldly methods to proclaim it.

The best that it seems you can get these days are the old school reformed cast of John McArthur, Phil Johnson, Todd Friel, Al Mohler and their group – great men – discerning, biblically sound and alert to heresy, error, charlatans and deceivers.

But even here I have been disappointed.

If you have been following the excellent Pulpit & Pen website, you’ll be aware of men like Friel and Johnson calling out Dr Michael Brown for his affirmation and whitewashing of even the worst purveyors of charismatic nonsense. They are right to do this.

But there is no little hypocrisy in their doing so:

It all goes to prove that as Christians, we have to be alert and discerning.

None of even these good men are without fault.

It’s easy to steer clear of most of the obvious heretics and deceivers listed earlier on this page.

But even among the better men, as this video points out, there is often a surprising lack of self-awareness.

The Gospel Message

The is my summary of The Gospel of the good news of Jesus Christ.

We’re all going through this journey of life. For many, it may be long and fulfilling and will end peacefully surrounded by loved ones. No matter how well it goes for you, I truly believe that the only thing that matters is whether or not you have put your trust in The Saviour of The World, Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God. Will you spend eternity in the presence of God? Here is the Gospel:

You and I and everyone else on this planet are part of a family.

We come from the original first man and woman. They and we were created by God in his image and for His own glory. However the first man and woman rebelled against God and brought on all of us the curse of both physical and spiritual death. (Genesis 1-2; Romans 5 v 12)

God’s anger now rests upon us (Romans 2 v 5) and unless He does something to save us, then the moment we die here on earth, our immortal souls will in that moment leave our body and be separated from God forever to go to a place of torment with no chance of escape. (Matthew 10 v 28)

We can do nothing to save ourselves from this fate.

The curse can only be removed by means of a perfect atoning sacrifice to be offered in our place. A sacrifice powerful enough to take away our sin – and the sins of the world.

BUT God in His mercy HAS done something to rescue us from this fate.

He sent His only Son Jesus to be born here on earth to live a perfect life among us – and this He did (John 3 v 16).

God knew in advance that some of us would choose to kill His Son and yet He allowed that to happen because Jesus was qualified to be that perfect atoning sacrifice being BOTH God AND Man.

During His ministry here on earth, Jesus explained that it was He and only He (John 14 v 6) who could lift the curse by offering His life on our behalf – and this He did.

Three days later God raised Jesus from the dead in a miraculous vindication of the testimony He had given about Himself and His purpose.

Now.

If YOU repent of your sin and believe that Jesus is who He says He is and did what He said He did, and you will acknowledge these things before others, YOU will have the curse of death removed. (1 John 1 v 9)

Instead of eternal separation from God, at the moment of death here on earth, your eternal soul will go to be with God in paradise.

Pray, and in the name of His Son, ask God the Father to grant you, by His power, true repentance from sin and true saving faith in His Son Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and from now on, the NEW Lord of your life.
